I had originally planned on avoiding eating at the same restaurants that we always seem to be eating at whenever we are visiting San Francisco. Well, that plan quickly fell apart when we were trying to figure out where to go for dinner tonight. After tossing around couple of places, my mom suggested we go to the House of Nanking and my dad and I did not object to her idea.

From our hotel, the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins, my parents and I walked the 0.6 mile to the House of Nanking via Mason and Jackson Street. Luckily for us, there was no line when we arrived a little before 6PM and we were seated immediately. As we always do when we eat here at the House of Nanking, we had Peter’s Wife order for us. After letting Peter’s Wife know what kind of ingredients we wanted and also the spicy level we wanted, she orders us a combination of dishes on the menu which she adjusts the spicy level of the dish to our liking and also one or two dishes not on the menu.

On todays visit, Peter’s Wife started us out with fish wonton soup, made spicy. After the fish wonton soup to start, came the other three dishes which were a shrimp and mushroom dish, their famous sesame chicken made spicy, and finally beef served on a bed of bok choy greens. The food here at the House of Nanking is nothing like your typical Chinese food. The best way I can describe the food here is its Chinese but the dishes are the chef and owner Peter’s own creation.

Also, when we order our food spicy at the House of Nanking, they actually do more than just throw in more chilis or hot sauce to the dish ordered. The spicy flavor tastes as if it was always meant to be part of the dish rather than something that just overpowers the flavor of the dish with the spiciness. Many of the flavors here are unique and unfamiliar in your typical Chinese food but seems to work remarkably well. During dinner, the table next to us inquired about some of the dishes we were eating and ordered the same items.

My suggestion for anyone who eats at the House of Nanking is ask Peter’s Wife to order for you if she is working. The three times that we’ve eaten at the House of Nanking, we’ve always had Peter’s Wife order for us or take her suggestion and it has never disappointed. Maybe one of these days, I’ll finally get her name and then I can stop referring to her as Peter’s Wife or Kathy’s Mom. If you visit the House of Nanking when it is busy, be prepared to wait in line outside along the restaurant window. When we were finished with our dinner and leaving, we saw that a line had formed outside full of hungry diners waiting patiently for a table.
