After enjoying the afternoon appetizers at the Sheraton Club at 5PM, my parents and I decided on a lighter dinner tonight. Since we were in Vancouver, we decided to try another restaurant which we saw on the Travel Channel. Yesterday we had lunch at Peaceful Restaurant, which was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, and tonight we are going to try out Japadog which was featured on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.
From our hotel the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, we walked the 0.6 miles to the Japadog location located on Robson Street. The store is small and seating a bit tight. After finding seating for ourselves at their countertop seating along the wall, I went up to the counter to order our hotdogs. After looking over the menu and then asking the cashier, I ordered two of Japadog’s Okonomi hotdogs, an order of Japanese Curry and cheese fries, and two diet sodas. My mom was still full from the evening appetizers so she did not want anything from Japadog. The curry fries came out first along with our two diet sodas. The fries were ok, but the combination of the curry, cheese and fries didn’t live up to what I was expecting. I’ve had curry and fries before which contained British Indian style curry so in my mind, I was expecting the curry fries to taste similar to that than what we ate. Don’t get me wrong, I love Japanese style curry but it just did not do it for me served over fries. Finally, when our number was called, I went up to the counter to pickup the two Okonomi hotdogs that I ordered. The top of the hotdog was over flowingly covered with bonito flakes which to be quite honest, made the hotdog a little difficult to eat. Also, the strong flavor of the bonito flakes seemed to overpower everything. Personally, I couldn’t really taste the sausage which is supposed to the main character in most hotdogs. The wasabi mayo from the condiment bar did help to kick back the overpowering bonito flakes a bit but, not enough for me to order the Okonomi hotdog again if I were to visit next time I’m in Vancouver.
Overall I think Japadog is ok, but I think the travel shows hyped it up way too much. I would suggest that everyone try it once and make up your own mind wether Japadog is worth the hype or not. In my opinion, the food here would be best after a night out at the bar or a maybe lunch if your close by but I would not go out of my way just to eat at Japadog.
