We took Taxi Green from Lima Airport to our hotel, Four Points by Sheraton in Miraflores. After what I’m estimating to be about 1 hour of practicing my my rusty Spanish with our taxi driver, we arrived at our Four Points Hotel, which will be our base of operation for the next 3 nights. After exchanging our goodbyes with the driver and giving a tip, we went inside the lobby to checkin. There was a American couple ahead of us checking in who also flew in on the same flight that my parents and I were on. I had a conversation with the wife while her husband was taking care of the checkin. We eventually wished each other a good trip and they headed up to their room when it was our turn to checkin.

We were greeted warmly and told that there was a slight problem. The last thing anyone wants to hear is “there is a slight problem” when you checking into your hotel after a long flight. It turned out that while I requested a room with 2 queen beds, they upgraded us to a suite for being SPG Gold, but the new room had only 1 bed. Unfortunately according to the front desk agent, they would not be able to get another bed into our room until the next day. I told the agent that would be fine and I had him finish checking us in. During the checkin process, we were also informed that breakfast was included each morning in our room rate. The included breakfast was a nice little surprise since we did not book a rate that included breakfast. I have to say, this is one thing that really bugs me about Starwood. It is great when it turns out that you get more than you were expecting at checkin, such as included breakfast, but I would be pissed if I selected the higher breakfast included rate and later found¬†out that breakfast was also included in the “non breakfast” rate. For this and other reasons, I usually avoid the inclusive rates, and just pay for breakfast if I feel like eating when I’m there. Sometimes you just want to sleep in and just skip breakfast¬†altogether.

After a much longer than usual checkin process involving much more paperwork and photocopies of passport and immigration cards due to Peruvian hotel tax law for foreigners (Foreigners, staying for 30 days or less do not pay room tax.), we finally made it to our room. The room was modern and nice with a separate bedroom and a living room. The living room had a sofa, a desk and chair, coffee table, and an armchair. The bathroom was clean and the setup was of the typical Four Point dispenser style soap and shampoo in the shower.

My parents slept on the bed while I slept on the two seater sofa for the first night. I went to bed on the sofa with only a pillow, but when I woke up, I discovered that my parents had given me the comforter from their bed. It was not too bad to sleep on the sofa, but I can see it being an issue for tall people. When we got back from lunch the following day, it turned out that the sofa that I slept on, was actually a pullout sofa bed and housekeeping set it up. The way I understood it the pervious night during checkin was that a rollaway bed would be provided, but not until the following day. We laughed when we saw the sofa bed made up in the living room.

Breakfast was served buffet style in the main hotel restaurant. The items were extensive and included both American/European style breakfast items as well as Peruvian style items as well. All items were tasty and since it was nice surprise at checkin to discover that breakfast was included for the non breakfast room rate, there was absolutely nothing to complain about! While sausage and bacon are available in the buffet, I really enjoyed the Peruvian pork chicharrones. Nothing like deep fried pork for breakfast.

One big negative of this hotel is the noise level. The walls are thin and you can hear everything going on in the adjacent room. To be fair, our room was one of those connecting rooms so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it, but we were able to hear housekeeping cleaning and the guests talking in the adjacent room . Other than the noise level, the view out of the window was nothing to write home about, but the free WiFi had decent speed. As the old cliche goes, its all about location, location, location and the Four Points By Sheraton Miraflores has that part down solid. When price, location and amenities are all considered, I’d give this hotel a solid B.
