One our tour of Machu Picchu with Hector and the Australian couple was over, Hector escorted us to the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge where afternoon tea would be served. At the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the afternoon tea service between 4:00PM – 4:45PM is exclusively for Hiram Bingham Train passengers. Right at 4:00PM we entered the restaurant and found ourselves a table to sit at and enjoy the afternoon tea service. The waiter came by to take our drink orders. While this event is called a “afternoon tea” one could order whatever one wanted to drink, including sodas. My parents stuck with tea, while I tried one of the many special juice concoctions that were available.
The food for the afternoon tea is served buffet style, with food options ranging from savory items, salads, finger sandwiches, pastries and dessert. All of the food items tasted fresh and delicious and after walking around Machu Picchu for four hours, the afternoon tea really hit the spot. Out of the 19 or so passengers who arrived on the Hiram Bingham Train with us, I believe maybe only half of them decided to partake in the afternoon tea, which made the restaurant and service feel very exclusive.
Forty-five minutes is allocated for the afternoon tea at the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, before anyone taking the Hiram Bingham Train back to Cusco on the same day, must get on the bus for the return trip back down to the station. This was more than enough time to relax and enjoy the afternoon tea buffet and if you want to, browse around the hotel grounds. Wi-Fi is available to Hiram Bingham passengers who want to update their social media, check email etc..
Once everyone was finished with the afternoon tea, Angela and Hector escorted any Hiram Bingham passengers going back down into town on the dedicated bus, which picked us up right in front of the hotel.
While the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge charges $1000.00+ per night, which made my mom gasp when I told her the per night room rate, the afternoon tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge restaurant, which is included in the cost of the Hiram Bingham Train ticket, was a good and affordable way to sample some of the fine Belmond services without breaking the bank.
